Abstract Anthropogenic marine debris is one of the major worldwide threats to marine ecosystems. The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) has established a protocol for data collection on marine debris from the gut contents of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), and for determining assessment values of plastics for Good Environmental Status (GES). Arctic charr and European whitefish are considered to be strong competitors in lakes, with the latter usually being the superior species. However, high niche plasticity and lake morphometry may suggestively facilitate resource partitioning and coexistence between charr and whitefish. Here, we explore the trophic niche utilization (diet and habitat use) of charr and whitefish co-occurring with brown trout in the deep and oligotrophic Lake Fyresvatnet, southern Norway (59˚05’N, 8˚10’E). Differential impact of marine debris ingestion during ontogenetic dietary shift of green turtles in Uruguayan waters

Anthropogenic debris ingestion has been reported for green turtles in all their life stages worldwide. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the marine debris ingestion by green turtles stranded in Uruguayan coast between 2005 and 2013. Debris items were categorized and quantified by frequency of occurrence, relative weight, volume and number of items. A total of 96 dead stranded turtles were analyzed and 70% presented debris in their guts. The majority of debris found were plastic, being hard plastics the most abundant in weight. Seasonal and ontogenetic shifts in the diet of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus in a subarctic lake.

Seasonal and ontogenetic shifts in the diet of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus were studied in a deep, ultra-oligotrophic lake in subarctic Finland from both stomach contents and the stable carbon (delta(13)C) and nitrogen (delta(15)N) isotope compositions of muscle and liver tissues. Both diet and isotope results indicated that the S. alpinus population relied mainly on littoral benthic energy sources. The strong littoral reliance appeared largely independent of season or fish size, although the data lacked small (total length, L(T),130 mm) and young (3 years) S. alpinus. Case report: Another death associated to γ-hydroxybutyric acid intoxication

Abstract We report a fatal γ-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) intoxication of a forty-year old man. According to an acquaintances’ statement, the deceased had drunk a beverage containing GHB approximately five hours before he was found. Postmortem GHB concentrations were determined using gas chromatography coupled to single quadrupole mass spectrometry after simple protein precipitation with methanol and derivatization with BSTFA (1% TMCS). Concentrations in body fluids and tissues of the deceased were as follows: cardiac blood 384 mg/L, femoral blood 358 mg/L, urine 864 mg/L, brain tissue 211 mg/kg, liver tissue 201 mg/kg, kidney tissue 492 mg/kg, bile 334 mg/L and gastric content 2025 mg/L. Dietary ontogeny and niche shift to piscivory in lacustrine brown trout Salmo trutta revealed by stomach content and stable isotope analyses

The feeding ecology and ontogeny of a large size range of brown trout Salmo trutta in Lake Fyresvatnet, southern Norway, were examined by stomach content and stable isotope analyses. According to the stomach contents, the S. trutta changed their diet at c. 30 cm total length (L(T) ). The smaller size classes fed on benthic invertebrates and surface insects, whereas larger S. trutta (30 cm) fed mainly on whitefish Coregonus lavaretus. Alternative for improving gut microbiota: use of Jerusalem artichoke and probiotics in diet of weaned piglets

AbstractThe aim of the study was to determine the effect of Jerusalem artichoke and probiotics on defence activity of intestinal cells of weaning pigs. One hundred eighty piglets (7 weeks old) were fed with basal feed supplemented with Jerusalem artichoke, Lactobacillus reuteri and Pediococcus pentosaceus. After 5 weeks, the piglets were slaughtered and the gastrointestinal contents and intestine samples were taken for analysis.
